Mrs. Abby Lerner: On Modesty and Personality
Hannah Siegel ('16)
December 8, 2014

Ma'ayanot students had the privilege of hearing from Mrs. Abby Lerner, a distinguished speaker and friend to many of the Ma'ayanot faculty, in an assembly December 5. Mrs. Lerner spoke about modesty, though not in terms of halakha or community norms.

Mrs. Lerner began by suggesting that when a girl wears a certain type of clothing, she is not necessarily giving a complete list of her qualities, but she is, however, choosing which characteristics to display to the public.

Letter from the Editors
November 27, 2014

Dear Ma’ayanot Community,

Welcome to a new year, to a new volume of The Source. We are delighted to have the opportunity to share Ma’ayanot news and features with you in what we hope is an enjoyable format.

Over the summer, we, along and with our talented staff, brainstormed how to enrich The Source and the sharing of Ma’ayanot news. Within the newspaper, you will see two new columns: a science column, called “SciSplash,” and an advice column, both of which were created with our readers in mind. As a girls high school that takes pride in its expanding science curriculum, we decided that it would be apt for The Source to dedicate a column to science, especially in a world that increasingly emphasizes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathermatics) for women. The new advice column addresses another critical aspect of Ma’ayanot -- its desire to help make each student feel comfortable by providing necessary assistance.

Our articles will emphasize news that is of particular relevance to our Ma’ayanot readers, as well as news that is of both communal and global significance.

IDF Soldier Speaks from the Heart

Sarah Weinberg ('15)

September 19, 2014

IDF soldier Yehoshua Konig spoke to students at a September 19th Ma’ayanot assembly about his experience in the army in the recent Protective Edge mission. Konig is an American who has lived an Orthodox Jewish life. He attended a yeshiva, went to a Jewish camp, and spent his gap year in Israel at a Hesder yeshiva, a program that combines Torah learning with army study. Konig then enlisted in the Israeli army and was an active soldier from 2007-2008. When his year was up and he was released from active duty, Konig requested to be part of the reserves (miluim) even though he is not obligated to do so as an American volunteer.

Freshman Day: For Unity and Fun
Tehila Azar ('17)
September 18, 2014

Ma’ayanot first-year students attended their annual Freshmen Day event, Thursday, September 18th. Freshmen Day is a trip that occurs annually in which the freshmen go to an outdoor center for activities, and have the opportunity to bond and form friendships. This year, the freshman went to Camp Vacamas, in West Milford, NJ. During the first half of the day, the grade was divided by their mehanekhet groups.  Each participated in activities and spent time with students with whom they might not share classes. Each mehanekhet group played games which helped them get to know one another, informally known as “ice-breakers.”  The purpose of these games was to learn each other’s names, and also to have  fun with games such as “human knot.”
