The school year has officially begun, and so have the sports seasons! Joining a Ma’ayanot sports team is a great way to get involved in the school, meet students in other grades, and most importantly, play a sport that you love. Coach Jennifer Sanders, the Ma’ayanot Athletic Director, agrees that high school sports confer a variety of benefits. Coach Jen, as she is affectionately known, encourages students to join teams because participation, she says, “builds confidence, leadership, and time management skills, and also teaches the valuable lesson of sportsmanship.”
The 2013-2014 Ma’ayanot sports season was quite successful. The hockey team, coached by Dave McCoy, Leora Kook, and Noam Weinberger, had an outstanding season. The team held a phenomenal record throughout the regular season and went on to win the championships against Frisch with a final score of 5-2. When asked how it felt to win the hockey championships after an unfortunate defeat in the 2012- 2013 season, Avigayil Shapiro (’16) and Jordana Lowy (’16) responded, “It felt great to bring the hockey banner back to Palisade Avenue, and to redeem both our banner and our pride. The win was also a reflection of the hard work that we displayed throughout the entire season.”
The varsity volleyball team, coached by Donna Riker and Kevin Vacciaa, was yet another Ma’ayanot team with an impressive season. The team played extraordinarily throughout the season, and went on to win the championships against Ramaz.
Additionally, both the JV and varsity soccer teams won the title of Division Champions in the regular season. The JV team was able to advance to the championship game, but unfortunately lost to S.A.R. after an intense game that went into triple overtime.
The JV basketball team, coached by Keni Ashby and Atara Polinsky, had a great season, as well, finishing with a final record of 8-2. The team came in at second place, losing to S.A.R. in the championships. The JV basketball team, however, did make Ma’ayanot history, and became the first basketball team to receive a banner in the gym!
